Wind and Bloating During Pregnancy

Humans pass wind 13 to 21 times per day on average, but when you're pregnant you may find yourself passing wind more often than usual. Find out how pregnancy increases bloating, burping and flatulence, and discover ways to get relief.

I’m pregnant, why am I suddenly so windy?

Blame progesterone: It relaxes smooth muscle tissue throughout your body. Including the muscle tissue that helps digestion.

What do you get in return?

• Wind
• Bloating
• Burping
• Flatulence

Lucky you!

Can changing my diet help?

The best way to reduce wind is to cut back on the foods that are most likely to cause it.

Common offenders?

• Beans
• Whole grains
• Cabbage
• Cauliflower
• Brussel sprouts
• Broccoli
• Asparagus

What else can I do to get relief?

Minimise the amount of air you swallow when you eat or drink:

• Chew thoroughly
• Limit how much you drink during meals (you can make up for it during the rest of the day)
• Drink from a cup or glass, and avoid straws

• Move! Even a brisk walk can aid digestion.

Call your GP or midwife if:

Your discomfort turns into severe pain or cramping.
You have severe diarrhoea, constipation or increased nausea and vomiting.

Like all unpleasant pregnancy symptoms, remember:

This too will pass!
