Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome and Fetoscopic Laser Surgery

The disorder of identical twin pregnancies happens when the twins share, or transfuse, blood unequally through the shared blood vessel connections within their placenta.  This results in one twin donating more blood to the other, causing problems in both twins. While the exact cause of this disorder is not completely understood, it is known that it develops in the second trimester. There are 4 stages of this disorder, and while it can resolve itself during the first stage, if it progresses and remains untreated, TTTS can be fatal. With a minimally invasive corrective surgery using advanced laser technology, the blood exchange between twins can be stopped and a healthy pregnancy can continue.
