How to Deal with Pregnancy Back Pain?

Pregnancy is an exciting time; unfortunately it comes with discomforts. Back pain during pregnancy is a common complaint. Women who are most at risk for back pain are those who are overweight or had back pain prior to pregnancy. Often, however, you can prevent or ease back pain during pregnancy.

Follow these simple steps to learn how to alleviate back pain.

Warning: Consult a physician before taking medication to treat back pain. Some pain relievers, like aspirin and ibuprofen, are not safe to use during pregnancy.

Step 1: Exercise

Exercise daily to strengthen and tone your back. Walking, yoga, and swimming are good exercises for pregnant women. Talk to your healthcare provider before you begin.

Tip: Swimming strengthens your lower back and abdomen without putting strain on your joints.

Step 2: Maintain healthy posture

Stand tall with your shoulders back and butt tucked under, so your back does not sway forward. Wear comfortable shoes and avoid standing for long periods of time.

Step 3: Sleep comfortably

Sleep on your left side, as recommended by physicians. Place a pillow between your legs or under your abdomen and bend one or both legs, whichever is more comfortable.

Step 4: Apply heat to uncomfortable area

Apply a heating pad on the uncomfortable area. Soak in a warm bath to ease the pain.

Step 5: Support belt

Wear a support belt. A support belt places support under your abdomen as it grows. It reduces pressure on your bladder, and improves posture and circulation.
