Health Risks of Being Overweight During Pregnancy

Being overweight or obese during pregnancy can cause complications for you and your baby. The more overweight you are the more likely you are to have problems but there are things you can do before and during pregnancy to help you have a healthy baby. 

Being overweight or obese can cause problems like:

- Premature birth

- Birth defects

- Macrosomia

- Health conditions, like diabetes, heart disease and obesity later in life.

If you're overweight or obese, you're more likely to have:

- High blood pressure, preeclampsia and problems with blood clots 

- Gestational diabetes

- A pregnancy that lasts past your due date 

- Problems during labor and birth

- C-section 

- Miscarriage or stillbirth

Here's what you can do to have a healthier pregnancy:

- Get a preconception checkup

- Get prenatal care

- Ask your provider about weight gain

- Eat heathy foods and be active

- Don't diet or try to lose weight
